How to assign grade levels when adding new people
There are two main ways you can add grade levels:
- Importing via SIS/LMS integration
- Manually assigning a grade level
- Bulk assigning grade levels to multiple people

SIS/LMS integration is the easiest way to add grade levels for each student in your school.
- Click "School Settings"
- Click "SIS and LMS"
- Click "Add SIS and LMS"
After adding your SIS/LMS, Flint will pull student grade levels and auto-populate. Learn more about importing users and terms from an LMS or SIS in Flint.
- Click "School Settings"
- Click "People"
- Click "Add people"
- Type the email associated with the member you want to add
- Click "Next"
- Click the "+Add grade(s)" button
- Choose the grade(s) you want to assign the member
- Click "Add"
- Click "Save"

Check that your CSV is in the correct format
Before you get started, take a look at your CSV file.
Here are some things to keep in mind:
- Flint can recognize flexible column names, so
grade_level,grade,grades, orgrade_levelsall work. - Grade level values are also quite flexible, as you can see in the example above. You can format grades using their:
- Full name:
Kindergarten,1st Grade,Pre-K - Grade codes:
KG,01,02,PK - Single digits:
1,2,3(for grades 1–9) - Ordinals:
1st,2nd,3rd,11th - "Grade N" format:
Grade 1,Grade 5,Grade 12
- Full name:
- For multiple grades, separate with semicolons (
;) or pipes (|). For example:K;01;02orK|1|2. - Make sure that your file is a .csv file. Flint will not be able to read PDFs or Excel files.
- Flint can recognize flexible column names, so

Click "School Settings"

Click "Upload CSV"
Once you upload, you'll have the option to Re-upload or Discard your spreadsheet.

Click "Next"

Check that auto-populated grade levels are correct
If you find that an incorrect grade level, you can select the grade and select from the dropdown.

Click "Add"

How to assign grade levels to people already in your school
You can also manually assign grade levels to people through the Member dashboard within your school settings. You can either do this manually for each member, or bulk assign grades.

Find the member who you want want to assign
You can find people either through the search bar, scrolling through the table, or finding people by their assigned role by clicking through the toggles. Learn more about people settings.

Click "Add grade(s)" under the "Grade Level" column

Assign a grade level to the student

Click "Save"
You can assign grade levels to many people at once using bulk actions.
- Click "School Settings"
- Click "People"
- Select the people who you want to assign using the check box on the left
- Click "Set grade levels"
- Select the grade level(s) you want to assign
- Click "Apply to X people"
- Click "Save"
How to edit grade levels
You may a have accidentally assigned the wrong grade level for a student, or SIS/LMS integration mislabeled a student's grade level. Here's how to fix that:

Click "School Settings"

Click "People"

Find the member whose grade level you want to edit

Select the assigned grade level

Edit the student's grade level
To remove a grade level, click the "X" next to the grade level.
To add a grade level, click the grade level in the dropdown menu.

Click "Save"
Frequently asked questions on grade levels in Flint
How do I make sure a student hasn't been assigned multiple grade levels?
If any students or unassigned people have been assigned multiple grade levels, you will be notified on the member dashboard.
When you click "See people with multiple grade levels," you will see a list of people who fall into this category.
To fix this issue, you can follow the same process as editing a student's grade level, simply by removing one of the grade levels through the dropdown selection.
